This is a fine little split from French label Ancient King Records was nudged gently in my direction and, as I had wanted to listen to Weress in particular for a while it was a fine opportunity to do so. So no reason to hesitate.
Arthuros bein with ‘Moonlight Lullaby’. A haunting, rich sweep of synths, twinkling with light notes opens up a vast, still night sky in your mind. The mood is gentle, vocals move with whispers and there is a gentle but strangely powerful feel to the music as it slowly wraps itself about you. From then the most haunting of melodies in deep tones envelopes you. It is like being in the presence of something, some mood that has aspirit of its own that knows you and simply wishes to show you grant vistas from a dark, velvet cocoon. It is a wonderful cosmic sound, a slow and content walk through the realms beyond. New melody pass by; perhaps they remain a little unknown but they are forever beautiful.
A sense of safety, a feeling of being protected and being wanted is offered here. What more can you ask for?
Forglord follows this. ‘Spires Of Starlight’ is one of those scene setting pieces that reveals a vista with such complete ease you are simply opening your eyes and… it is there. I am sure what forms in my mind will be different from you, but I see a dark, dark night, high above the vales and meadows. I see the crags of low mountains and there, rising like delicate spindles are the Spires. Perhaps in another world they might seem grim or foreboding but the music is nothing but full of wonder for these ancient towers. The sky is strangely starless but the spires with delicate magic spread their own. I look closer as I approach and the richness of the music and those notes and motes of light grow stronger. I am surrounded, born up and the music seems to billow out and I have no idea where I am going but, wherever, it will be a journey of wonder.
Enthralling indeed.
Finally we have Weress. ‘Royaume de la Nuit’. The sounds of perhaps a xylophone raise those beautiful, echoing organic sounds as the darkness billows out in the synths. Like the offerings before there is just this beautiful sense of peace and of wonders to show. Here though the feel is most definitely dark. Not malevolent; more majestic and perhaps unknowable. The mystery here is laid out in perfectly layered, dark motions that indeed fell regal. A queen’s hand smoothing them out before us. It is one of those strange musical places where, though reason to fear is offered, the sometimes sombre, always deep music softly counsels you to be respectful. This is not your place and, though you are welcome to look upon it, it is a place that is not your home. Not yet at least.
An elegant end to an excellent split.
This is, as demonstrated, a perfect introduction to three excellent projects. There is as you would hope, a certain kinship in these compositions but with eyes and souls that see the different strands in the same visions and follow them with care and with respect. Its not just a great instroduction, though, it’s a super work by itself.
So very impressed, and a Triune Of Stars indeed.
