Serendipity. Cute word, look it up if you’re unaware (just because, well you’ll see).
Now see that fantastic pen an ink drawing in the square on the directory bit? Drawn by the insanely talented Daniel Sawblade (see credit), the original hanging on my wall, it is of my D&D character Grettle. A goblin. Small, incredibly fierce, defensive but sneak past those walls and you’ll find an oddly quiet little soul with a deep melancholy upon them. Relevance?
Well this demo I chanced upon by the strange ways chance has, is masterminded by The Little Goblin and is their first release. Which frankly is just…
Hmm. Focus. You see it was just me investigating when they cropped up on my Instagram and as the first sombre sounds and delicate notes conjured ‘The Tower Of Enchantment’, as those deep chords swelled to the dark clouds I was simply and quite beautifully there. This was a shock indeed, so simply had it been accomplished. Their socials showed they are a fan of the Goblin King himself, Mortiis and yes it shows but in the most perfect way; this is dark dungeon music indeed yet not imitation. It is a spirit true to the source yet seeing the world created entirely through their own eyes. ‘Tears Of The Goblin’ just aches with emotion, a soft and slow melody, the odd bell in the distance like a new discovery. You can almost see the Little Goblin stepping carefully from cover and seeing a strange, possibly dangerous world opening out before them but knowing there is no way to go back along their path. ‘The Wanderer In The Forest’ is a deep but lilting sound. Haunted echoes, something small dwarfed by both the height and the age of those trees around them. There is not so much stillness rather an almost imperceptible movement as we pass by. Simply the motion of a leaf or a dark branch. A shadow low to the ground, a twitch of the undergrowth. We end here with ‘The Book Of Spells And Enchantments’. A little simple rhythm added, somehow ominous or warning to be respectful. It weaves its spell without error and, enchated I really don’t want to leave.
It is just dark and sumptuous music and as the words above hopefully show its transportative touch is shockingly adept, incredibly mature.
This demo weaves a tale and creates a world as though it has been straining to be let free. For a first demo it is frankly… ridiculous. I don’t want to heap hyperbole up the poor little goblin’s shoulders but I genuinely feel that this demo is something special indeed and I can’t wait to see where her journey takes me.
Someone please offer a physical release of this to the Little Goblin. I would so love for this to be a spell and an artefact because this I hope is the beginning of a wondrous journey.

(And for those in the UK, the fact I got all the way through and didn’t once mention Blackadder took such restraint…. Oh damn!)
